It is with great sadness that we share the news of his passing, reflecting on his remarkable journey as a player and leader. Barry’s connection with the world of football began in his early days, growing up playing juniors in Maribyrnong before making his mark at Footscray 3rds as a talented 17-year-old. With 33 Reserves games and 22 Senior games under his belt at Footscray, Barry then took his skills to the Sunshine VFA club, accumulating over 100 games and invaluable experience that would later shape his legacy at Braybrook. In 1969, Barry’s coaching journey at Braybrook began under the guidance of President Jack Arnell. He brought a fresh perspective to the club, introducing changes like restricting alcohol sales to players on Thursday nights in pursuit of a greater goal: a premiership. His famous response to the President’s query, “Do you want money or do you want a premiership?” showcased his commitment to success. In his inaugural year, Barry led the A Grade team from 7th position to the forefront of the competition. Though they fell short in the finals, the foundation for growth had been laid, and Barry fostered emerging talent within the team. The year 1971 saw the team secure the Minor Premiership, but once again, they faced heartbreak in the finals.
