Dave Stein Obituary, Death Cause – This morning, I received the very upsetting news that an old friend of mine named Dave Stein had passed suddenly. I initially became acquainted with Dave when he booked Youth of Today for their third gig ever, which took place in Albany, New York. Dave was one of our earliest allies. When I went to school for a short time in Oswego, New York, where there was no hardcore scene, I would travel the train almost every weekend to Albany to see events.

Dave was kind enough to let me stay at his apartment, and he even slipped me into the cafeteria at his school to eat. He was responsible for putting on a large number of successful performances, some of which featured 7 Seconds, Warzone, Project X, Underdog, GBH, DRI, Suicidal Tendencies, and the Descendents, among a great many more. But he wasn’t just an event promoter; he was also a tremendous lover of hardcore, and he went out of his way to support the bands and the scene.

As a result, everyone looked up to him and admired what he did. Dave was also an early proponent of the straight edge movement and vegetarianism, and he was quite vocal about his support for both causes. He became a music lawyer in order to fight for fair contracts for bands, and he assisted everyone from Agnostic Front to Sick of It All to Shelter to Taking Back Sunday. His unyielding sense of justice inspired him to become a music lawyer.
